In 2000 I stopped fishing Florida and started fishing the Venice, Louisiana waters and Mississippi river.
Before hurricane Katrina hit the coast of Louisiana in 2005, Richard Gray, Dick Seitz and myself fished the mouth of the Mississippi river for Red Fish. It was known for bull reds and they were big. At times it was every cast and they were 20 to 40 lbs. It was as good as any fishing could offer.
However, as soon as Katrina arrived it was over and then a year later when the BP oil spill happened it was just icing on the cake. What was the best fishing in the country was now just a place to go fishing. Like everything we do in life it never lasts forever.
We were there when it was at its prime. We were lucky to get a few years in before nature and man changed it all. Right time, Right place!
A time and place in life that will probably never exist again and future fishermen will never experience what we did. We were very fortunate!
