Trinidad and Tobago offers some large Wahoo fishing compared to the US. Between 1995 and 2000 I spent many weeks around this area. Both are just a few miles from the Venezuela coast line and are known for large Marlin, Wahoo and King fish. I fished there in the winter because of warm weather. The winter months are known for Wahoo and they range from 70 to 110 lbs. The Marlin run from 350 to 700 lbs. Peter had a 35 ft. twin screw that made good time so we could fish a number of areas in 8 hours. With offshore fishing, it’s easier if you’re young. It can get rough out there on the water. It’s not meant for everyone, but in my earlier days I spent a lot of time off shore and caught everything that hangs out in water two to five thousand feet deep. With age I prefer smaller fish, it’s less work. The most time and most work catching a fish was in Portland, Oregon. 700 lb. sturgeon and my back has never been the same.
When you fish for Marlin, you never know when it’s going to happen. You can ride around all day and never have a bite. The next day you can find eight in one spot. It’s a slow process to catch big fish. I was the only one on the boat fishing but if there’s 4 fishermen, one might not get a chance to hook up. It costs $2,400.00 a day now so that’s why it takes 4 fishermen to afford it. The numbers today are much lower than 1995. All offshore fishing is down 50%.
